Trial by jury is one of the most fundamental democratic protections in our system of government.  It stands as a cornerstone of democracy and a key safeguard to individual liberties.  Trial by jury is one of the greatest protections we have as citizens.  It means that no matter how powerful the opponent – whether it’s a corporation, an insurance company, or even the government – ordinary people can hold them accountable.  The word democracy comes from the Greek words “demos”, meaning people, and “kratos” meaning power; so democracy can be thought of simply as “power of the people”.  The outcome of legal disputes determined by empaneled citizens, i.e. a jury, what could be more democratic?

Today our democratic justice system faces serious challenges.  Nationwide efforts are being taken to limit access to the courts, restrict damages or cap non-economic loss, and attacks are being waged on the fairness and integrity of our courts and jury trials.  These threats remind us why the SDTLA’s principles, goals, and mission are so important.  Through our Membership’s support of both time and financial contribution, we meet these challenges.  The SDTLA promotes, advocates, and fosters preservation of our right to trial by jury in courtrooms, in the legislature, through recruitment of young lawyers, and through education and public awareness.  Join us and contribute to our cause – preserving our democratic right to trial by jury.

“Jury service honorably performed is as important in the defense of our country, its Constitution and laws, and the ideal and standards for which they stand, as the service that is rendered by the solider on the field of battle in time of war.” Hon. George H. Boldt.
